Ugh, I give up adding information about conventions or anything from scratch to Wikipedia. Everything I write there gets reverted! Best of luck in creating a wiki page on JAFAX.

Our best bet would be to follow a simple template for events/conventions that already exists for wiki entries. There used to be a page for JAFAX, but it was clearly written by the staff at the time and read like an advertisement. This might be something the staff can address in the lull of activity in the fall.

The article would also need a lot of 3rd party references, like the FOX 17 spot or reports from groups like The Enthusiasts. Wikipedia has developed some pretty strict notability standards, and there are editors in high places that will delete articles for even the smallest issue.

You need to start by posting your page that reads as an article about a long lasting free event. Then link it to this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_anime_conventions

Reference a lot of crap too.  Pick out any guests you have and link them to your wiki page.

Use this as an example; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime_Punch!

Finally, make back up copies on your pc and then when or if it gets reverted re-post until they give up or ban your IP then get other members with other IPs to post.  In the end I wouldn't feel bad, most of the info posted to the wiki is crap inaccurate anyway.  Tongue

Bad idea. Abusing Wikipedia like that can not only get you banned from using it (like you mentioned), it would likely kill any chances of getting an article on there in the future, when JAFAX is more notable. There are procedures for everything on Wikipedia, and as annoying as they are (believe me, I know from experience), it's best to follow them.

When Jafax is more notable? It has been around for 16 years, and you don't think it is worth noting.  Tongue

For christsake there are people younger than the event itself attending.  I am just commenting that if you want a writeup on wiki (which I dont put much stock in) you need to bug the hell out of those people.  Personally I dont use wiki except to do essays but even then  a lot of the info is not very accurate.

I believe your staff and con leaders should focus on getting a major news network out.  CNN reported on something called Geekkon in Madison, Wisconsin a few years ago. The good was all the attention made the next convention bigger and better.  The bad news was they went from free registration to charging $30 per person.

Lesson is sometimes quiet is better.

Being on Wikipedia isn't the be all and end all of JAFAX.  Jafax was around before Wikipedia so not having an article on Wikipedia isn't really high on the priority list and is also not hurting Jafax.  We would rather have people go to the website/forums to learning about Jafax.  We've been growing each year just on fans and "word of mouth" alone.  We really don't need to have news crews covering the event when there are several hundred YouTube videos from attendees to show people what Jafax is about.

If CNN did cover Jafax and had an explosion of attendance the next year, we would have to charge too, because we would have to move to a convention hall since the Grand Valley campus would not be able to handle that many people.

Of course I think JAFAX is worth noting, but that's not what matters. It matters if other Wikipedians think it's notable.

Like I said, it's usually not a good idea to make trouble for someone with the power to ban you. That's a pretty basic principle that applies to the whole internet.
