The Japanese Animation, Film and Art Expo, or JAFAX, is West Michigan’s first, biggest and longest running event all about Japanese Animation, Comics and Culture. Once a year, at the end of June, we gather on the campus of Grand Valley State University and have a fun weekend full of Events, Panels, Showings, Vendors, and Artists (both voice and visual, professional and novice).

Our theme this year, ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → B A Anime, will see us focus especially on the video games and the impact Japanese games have had on our culture.

JAFAX is not a typical anime convention. Most notably, JAFAX is free; there’s no fee to get in the door, and no registration; it’s completely open to the public. JAFAX is held at a university, not a hotel or conference center. The showing rooms are lecture halls and classrooms, not conference rooms. It doesn’t run 24 hours. It’s a truly unique experience, a blend of grass-roots anime club, multicultural event, and anime convention. You won’t find anything else like it anywhere.

JAFAX is located on the campus of Grand Valley State University. If you stand at the green arrow facing east, you will be looking at the entrance to JAFAX.

Finding Things at JAFAX

We are still working out some of the details of our building layout for this year, and determining what construction we may need to work around. When we know everything we will post a detailed map on this page. In the meantime, this campus map from Grand Valley will give you an idea of what to expect. Main events are held in Loutit/Padnos (41 on the map), and much of our programming is found in Manitou/Mackinac (43 & 44 on the map). We will also be making heavy use of Kirkhof (32 on the map), more so than previous years.
